Common Uses

Installed at the wall-to-ceiling junction at the correct spring angle. Hemlock is the preferred softwood for stained moulding. Its pitch-free surface means no bleed-through under paint and no blotching under stain.

Pro Tips

  • Position crown upside down and backwards in the mitre saw -- ceiling edge flat on the saw table, wall edge against the fence. This is the correct cutting position for compound mitres.
  • For paint: apply directly -- no knot sealer needed. For stain: hemlock accepts stain evenly with a pre-stain conditioner. For clear finish: sand to 180-grit and apply water-based polyurethane or lacquer.
  • Nail crown into both wall studs and ceiling joists for a secure installation. Use a stud finder to locate both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is spring angle?
Spring angle is the angle at which crown sits between wall and ceiling. Common angles are 38/52 and 45/45. The flat edges on the crown back determine the angle.

Why choose hemlock over pine?
Hemlock is pitch-free -- no resin bleed under paint, no sticky sap. It also accepts stain more evenly than pine. Hemlock is the premium softwood choice when finish quality matters.
